The Attitude of Gratitude: 33 Things to be Grateful For
With Thanksgiving approaching it is about time to think of everything we are thankful for, and believe me, there are many things in our life that we take for granted.
Here is a list of 33 Things to be Grateful for that I have put together as a reminder for you and myself:
1. Your parents. I know that sometimes our parents can be controlling, stubborn, demanding, but they still love us no matter what we do and where we are. If you have your parents around, take a moment to let them know how much they mean to you. If they are not longer with you, be grateful for all the happy moments that you have shared together.
2. Having to get up early to go to work. In the morning it might not seem like a blessing, but it really is. Think of all the extra hours you get to enjoy life, while other people might be wasting them. Besides, if you have to get up before dawn, you are one of the rare people, who get to see beautiful sunrises almost every day.
3. Freedom of faith. For thousands of years people have fought for it, have died for it, and have worked towards it. So that you can freely choose your religion and believe in God, without being persecuted or treated poorly.
4. Financial security. You might worry about paying off the mortgage and saving enough to send your kids to college, but if you have a roof over your head, food in your fridge and enough money to pay your bills, you are luckier than 90% of the world’s population.
5. Chocolate. Try to picture life without chocolate – not being able to have a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day, no chocolate cake or chocolate flavored ice-cream, no pancakes with Nuttella. Terrifying, isn’t it?
6. Internet. It may sound geeky, but the Internet has literally opened new horizons for every one of us. Thanks to the Internet we can now get to know people from all over the world, download our favorite songs and books in just a few seconds or get an answer to about every problem that we might encounter.
7. Airplanes. It always amazes me that it takes only 8 hours to cross the Atlantic Ocean and travel from the U.S. to Europe. When you think that only a few hundred years ago a trip to a neighboring country took days, and sometimes weeks, a 2-hour flight delay starts to seem like a minor inconvenience.
8. Good health. Our health is something we often take for granted and begin to appreciate only when we lose it. Do not make this mistake! Take good care of your body.
9. Your home. If you believe that your apartment or house is too small or too outdated, think about the movie “Pursuit of happiness”, where the main hero would do anything in order not to see his son sleeping at the local homeless shelter.
10. Brothers and sisters. Those annoying little brothers and bossy older sisters definitely made our life more challenging and strangely more fun when we were little. They taught us how to share, how to fight and how to forgive. If not for them, we would not be who we are.
11. Your car. Because it is a luxury only few people in the world can afford.
12. Pets. Because they add so much to our life, giving us joy, warmth and unconditional love every single day.
13. Inspirational books. Because they make us believe anything is possible.
14. Beautiful music. Because it sooths our soul and lifts our spirits.
15. Great friends. True friends are hard to find. If you have found one, consider yourself very fortunate.
16. Beauty of nature. Anytime you want something to be thankful for, spend some time with nature.
17. A smile from a stranger. A genuine smile given without expecting anything in return is one of the best gifts anyone can share or receive.
18. Having a true belly laugh.
19. Having a loving and supportive mate. How many people do you know, who have found their other half and have been able to build strong, loving relationships? If you are one of these people, consider it your biggest blessing!
20. Weekends. It is so wonderful that after an intense working week comes the weekend, when we can sleep in, go to the movies, invite friends over or just do what we love!
21. A Good night’s sleep. Our generation sleeps on average 1-2 hours less than we should. A Good night’s sleep is definitely something to be grateful for.
22. Flowers. Ok, maybe you are not a romantic type of person, who stops to smell a lonely flower growing on the side of the road. But even if you do not care much about giving or receiving flowers, you can not argue that they please the eye and lift the spirits.
23. A baby’s laugh. Especially if it was you, who made them laugh.
24. Feeling safe. It is nice to know that we can freely walk down the streets without worrying about being attacked by a hungry Grizzly bear or shot by a drunken pirate.
25. Air conditioning on a hot summer day. Or if you live in the Northern part of the globe, think of the heating that keeps you warm on cold winter days.
26. Being debt free. It is so liberating to know that when you buy something, you can afford it, and that you are not wasting any money on outrages interest charges.
27. Good vision. If you can read these words without having to put on glasses, it is already a little miracle. Ask anyone who wears glasses!
28. Your children getting along. Between fighting and screaming and whining come those priceless moments of peace and tranquility, when your children hug each other and get along just fine. It is in moments like this that you truly understand how blessed you are!
29. Having energy to enjoy life.
30. The clothes in your closet. I admit – sometimes I complain that I have nothing to wear. But, honestly, I have plenty. And probably so do you.
31. Your teachers and mentors. Think of all the people in your life, who have taught you something, gave you valuable advice, inspired you and helped you to grow and improve your character. Take time to say “thank you” for everything they have done for you.
32. Clean water. There are 1.2 billion people who do not have access to clean, safe water. (If you want to help read more here).
33. Today! Because today is another day of your life given to you to grow, love and learn new lessons!
Besides being thankful for everything I have mentioned above, I personally am grateful for YOU, my readers. It is truly a privilege to write for you, learn from you and feel your support and encouragement.
My list is over!
Can you add anything else?
What are YOU thankful for?
