What is Your Very Favorite Leisure Activity That Does Not Involve Spending Any Money?

happy people on the beach 300x193 What is Your Very Favorite Leisure Activity That Does Not Involve Spending Any Money?Yesterday I read a study conducted a couple of years ago by a group of scientists. They asked high school girls about their favorite activities and 97% said “shopping” and “going to the movies”.
While I enjoy going shopping myself, it is kind of sad that most of our favorite activities are closely linked with spending money. Maybe this is why the majority of people struggle with credit card debts?
I am a true believer that in order to have fun, you do not have to spend a lot of money! In fact, the brightest and happiest memories of my life have nothing to do with money.
I can vaguely recall what I bought the last time I went shopping, but I vividly remember a picnic in a park with my family when they came to visit me in Milan.
One of my favorite things to do when I have some free time is reading great books (sometimes I also indulge in romantic and fiction novels.  What can I say? Guilty pleasures still feel good!).
What about you? What do you like to do in your spare time? Can you think of any fun activity that does not involve spending money? Great!
Write it down in the comment section below. Let’s make our own list of fun, free activities that anyone can do!

Some of my happiest and brightest memories: As a child spending time with my dad at Lincoln Park in Chicago,Ill. during the difficult times of his unemployment.Taking my kids to a picnic lunch and sharing our dreams.Moments of prayer bring me peace and strength. Singing in my church choir lifts my soul.Reading a good positive thinking and self improvement book.Giving a helping hand to one in need is truly rewarding.

I live in the DC area and there are tons of free museums and events. At least 2x a month our family gets out to enjoy them. Recent expeditions included the National Marine Corps Museum, US Botanical Gardens, National Air & Space Museum, and the French Embassy. With 2 adults and 4 kids, these options save us literally hundreds of dollars a month while giving our family unique memories :o )

tons of stuff to do both by yourself, or with a friend or family member (preferred since activies with others are what build the truly lasting memories)… How about:
teach yourself a foreign language, or improve this one (look up a new word a day and then use it).
look up the history of your area and then take a friend to the oldest place and share the history.
put on something so silly it makes you slightly uncomfortable, then go walk around and pay attention to the smiles around you.
visit a homeless shelter, senior citizen’s home, or hospital wing – you’d be amazed how many people would do anything for company, and what you can learn from the new peoplpe you meet.

Reading books, studying the Bible, searching on line for subjects of interest, taking leisure time with the wifey and extended family (LOLOL), video sports games, martial arts, strength and flexibility excercise, shooting hoops for personal gratification (no full court with these knees) and my very favorite is 6 am Saturday morning bike rides with my playlist in my ears. Needless to say I am a summer person!

Yesterday my boyfriend and I were in a town we were strangers to, so we spent the afternoon in the public library cuddled in the children’s section and read as well as napped haha. As well, I love to fish, and in the summer time, relax in the sun with inspirational books and listen to music. Another thing that I love to do is ride my bike when I get the chance in the summer and fall :)

Walking through the woods on a trail that highlights native trees, flowers, birds, vistas, ‘hidden’ water streams, finding edible plants along the way; I can spend a whole day or many days enjoying the outdoors and nature. Or, picking up a book at the library and taking the time to read it all at one time; what a treat!

This is a great money-saving advice! I have started to do the same thing, while living in Milan. There are so many free exhibitions, concerts and different events happening every week. The key is to know where to look.

This is amazing advice, Chris! I love your idea to look up the history of your area and then take a friend to the oldest/most interesting place. Once in a while I do something similar. I walk around the city and try to look at it with the “tourist” eyes. It is amazing how many remarkable buildings and interesting details you are able to see, when you are really looking…
I also like your idea to put on something silly and walk around dressed like that, not worrying what other people might say or think about you. It is a great exercise to overcome inner blocks and social conditioning.
And, of course, volunteering to keep a company to elderly or poor people is a very gratifying and compassionate activity. I wonder have you ever visited a homeless shelter yourself? I would like to learn more about it…
