The Hidden Psychology behind “Poor” People’s Mindset

Have you noticed how some people seem to have everything they need to be successful: right knowledge, good looks, family connections and starting capital and yet they fail miserably? While others who do not seem to be that smart or that outgoing become successful against all the odds? The true reason behind success and material wealth is not the resources that you have; it is the way you think, talk and act!
Usually after talking with a person for 15 minutes you can already tell if they will achieve the great heights of turning money-making into a never-ending struggle.
Poor people generally talk about:
• Their problems and all the injustices ever done to them
• Discuss banal reality shows, latest “news” and negative events that they have no control over
• Gossip about other people – what is wrong with them
• Blame everything and everyone for their misfortunes
• Complain about their lazy spouses, ungrateful kids, stupid boss, and controlling parents
• Have strong prejudices against other social groups (usually this includes wealthier and more successful people, people of other nationalities and other religions)
• Brag about all the good things that they have ever done for someone else
• Invest in things that bring instant gratification, without thinking about the consequences.
Wealthy or wealthy-to-be people talk about:
• New theories and skills that they are learning
• Investment ideas and strategies
• People who inspire and guide them
• Positive events that have happened in their life
• Activities and things that motivate them
• Their long-term goals
Poor people believe that:
• Having a lot of money will make them happy
• Wealthy people have more money, and therefore they must share that money with the less fortunate – THEM!
• Success is a natural result of “getting lucky”, not working hard towards your dreams
• Self-help programs and books are just rip offs, because if someone wants to help you, they should give you all the information for free. (But if information is free, it is perceived as not valuable enough).
• Quick-fix solutions are the best ones!
• They already “have it all figured out” and their opinion is the only right one.
Wealthy people believe that:
• Creating strong relationships will make them happy
• Money is just a tool to achieve higher goals and help others in need
• Wealth is a result of constant self-improvement and hard work
• Investments in education and knowledge always pay off
• Quick-fix solutions do not bring long-lasting results.
• They do not know everything and are opened to new ideas, suggestions and different opinions
Poor people:
• Are careless with their money and spend it on things that make them feel important or that bring immediate satisfaction (new car, huge satellite dish, alcohol, cigarettes, and entertainment)
• Rely on their credit card in cases of emergency
• Do not take good care of their health (eat junk food, do not exercise, do nothing about changing bad habits)
• Spend most of their free time watching TV
• Passively react to everything that happens in their life
• View obstacles as something that are beyond their control
• Perceive failure as evidence of their inadequacy and “bad luck”
• Get an adrenaline rush out of watching horror movies and doing “stupid” things
• Are very creative when it comes to making up excuses
• Respond aggressively to any type of critique
Wealthy people:
• Invest money in assets that over time increase in value
• Put aside a certain amount of money on a monthly basis in order not to rely on credit cards in cases of emergency
• Take good care of their health (eat organic food, exercise regularly, make regular medical check-ups)
• Spend their free time doing something fun with their family or reading books
• Take pro-active steps to make their life better in the future
• Perceive failure as an opportunity to learn valuable lessons and test their ideas
• Get an adrenaline rush out of starting new projects and applying new concepts
• Are very creative when it comes to finding solutions to the problems that they are facing
• View critique as a feedback
Of course, you can say that wealthy people do all these things, because they ALREADY have money. Therefore, they can afford to eat better food,  invest in educating themselves and put money away for the rainy day, while “poor” poor people are forced to eat fast food, because it is cheap, and rely on a credit card to make payments, because they simply do not have any savings. Maybe it is true. But maybe it is just another excuse…
It seems to me that it is more probable that wealth is a result of the right mindset, proactive thinking and long-term planning. Not that proactive thinking and long-term planning is a result of wealth.

Arina….This is right on. What a precise and to the point comparison. If a person just followed the wealthy persons thinking as illustrated here there may be no telling as to the level of success one may obtain. This may seem to be simple but it really gets to the heart of unsuccessful thinking. Thanks for writing on this and bringing it to our attention.

Arina….Thanks for the bounty of insight! You truly seem to have an intuitive knack for understanding the psychological differences between being with, and without (wealthy/poor). I can say that you have just nailed down many of the poor concepts which I have struggled with in my life, and you have also enforced the wealthy traits which I have, and just realized their value! So, after stumbling over your article in twitter, I can now say that I am going to become one of your dedicated followers/subscribers! Thanks for sharing, for I truly feel that your wisdom is for the ages to come, and I know that now I can share a little wealth with the rest of the people I encounter in my world, both digital and physical!! Adios…LostinTranslation!

Arina, I couldn't agree more the hidden psychology of poor people's mindset often comes as a direct result of their focus. If you focus on debt, you get more debt, likewise with hardship. This is so well described in the science of getting rich book. Wallace Wattles has some great quotations you may find for future blog posts.

I really like this post in what you have posted! THis is so true in what most people act in such ways of having a mentality of being wealthy or poor! It's true that most people act so ungrateful in so many things because it attract those types of same things in their lives! In the terms fiances, I agree in what you have spoken that people who are wealthy look for quick solutions, not to complain something simple! That's what most people do, they truly complain over piety and very simple stuff, rather than being grateful or finding a simple solution to fix the problem!

I think this lifestyle is getting mroe and more popular due to so many problems and violence.

  • Noshermerillinois

Unbelievable…  Elitist…  Rationalization for greed…   Are there NO disenfranchised people then?  NO ONE is taking advantage of the poor but themselves????  Seriously?  Doing “stupid” things???  Rich people eat organic foods and go to the doctor regularly BECAUSE THEY CAN AFFORD TO!!!!!  Help others in need???? I have as YET to see a RICH person do this for ANY other reason than personal GUILT….    And… BTW… this ENTIRE thing comes off as pretty blatantly racist even though you obviously carefully worded things so as to give an impression of racial objectivism.
Wow… you are clearly white, rich, and…. guilty.

  • the rich guy

everything you said is perfectly right about the rich and poor.
couldnt have been better than this. i just love it!

  • Brian L.

Quick question, so for all the wealthy people that initially started out poor but worked their way to the top, did all those things you say represent poor people represent them too?  After all, we all have to start somewhere.

  • Shaval

Absolutely not. People who ultimately reach financial success are very careful with their money and the way they spend their time. If they didn’t, they would have been slaves all of their lives. They learn to save because it’s not something you are not born with, so they can have money when they need it the most.

  • Arina

I’m sorry, Noshermerillinois, that you find this article elitist and racist. It may seem too strong to divide “poor” and “wealthy” people based on their actions and their mindset, not just based on their income. I apologize if it has hurt your feelings in some way. I actually missed one important point in this article – the description of ‘poor’ people mentality is based on me.

I used to be that poor girl, working at a restaurant, eating fast food and watching reality shows about rich and famous people in my spare time. And I thought exactly same things you are writing in your comment – wealthy people take advantage of those who do not have money. They have not done anything to deserve their good fortune and their ‘donations’ and “good deeds” are simply a way of raising their popularity.
It took me a while to confront my beliefs and realize that the problem is not a bad economy, my lack of degree or poor medical care. The problem lied in my way of thinking. I was the one who made all the choices. It was not easy to accept the responsibility for who I was, but this has been a turning point of my life.

And you know what? Gradually I found time to do yoga, to study, to change my eating habits and to learn how to be grateful for everything I already had. It took me ten years to get from where I was to where I am right now. I am far away from being a multimillionaire and I still have a lot of inner work to do. But I no longer consider myself “poor” either.

If this article stirs such a negative emotional response in you, maybe instead of judging me, you could take a moment to reflect on what is it that you can change in your life to improve it? Believe me eating better, drinking more water, working out, reading books about the subjects that you like, starting your own online business, meeting new interesting people or helping others does not cost hundreds of dollars (and you should not wait until you feel guilt to do that). But I know it for sure that as long as you associate wealth with being white, dishonest and greedy your subconscious mind will do anything in its power to prevent you from improving your financial affairs. This is not my theory. This is psychology.

Again, I’m very sorry if what I said had hurt your feelings. It was not my intention.

  • Justin

wow. I think you are a very shallow and misguided person that doesn’t understand the complexities of poverty. In looking for an educational source, I came across your purely personal belief that helps bring light on the fact that many people have little or no understanding of socioeconomic factors that influence the poverty trap. Good luck to you, and I hope you decide to do some research before you post this terrible interpretation of the psychological views of people that you do not understand or anything like it.

  • Chantal

Your ideas are true about many people (including people I know), but please don’t forget that disabilities, especially mental illnesses, can make it prohibitively hard for people to succeed.  That’s why there are so many schizophrenic homeless people.  Intelligence can also mean the difference between success and failure, especially when it comes to ingenuity, money management, and doing well in school.  When success is something that has to be competed for, there will inevitably be losers, even if some of them try their hardest.

  • Seabirdmarine
  • Rodney J.

Exactly.  You do have to start somewhere.  What he is trying to say in this article is wealth starts within your mind.  There are many people who started out poor, changed their mindset, and became successful.  People who dropped out of college or never attended who have become great successes.  Change your mind first, then your outcome on life will follow suit.  He’s giving you 7 tools to get it done.  I agree with this article 100%.
