How to Make This The Best Summer Ever

Have you been looking forward to long, hot, hazy summer days? My family (and probably every single sun-loving person living in Northern Europe) have dreamed about them. And after months of rain and cold weather the summer finally came!

But a real question is – are we really making the maximum of our sweet summer days?

Let’s take you and me, for example. Did you make time to do something cool and ‘summery’ these past weeks? Like organizing a picnic by a lake or the ocean? Going biking, golfing or fishing? Or starting and finishing a book in one day?

How about taking time to walk barefoot on the grass? Listening to the birds’ sing? Inviting friends for a summer cookout?
No? This must be the biggest paradox!

We grumble about the rainy, cold weather, but when the summer finally comes we’re too busy to enjoy it. Somewhere, in between our house remodeling projects, TV watching and pushing ourselves to work harder before our summer vacation, we lose track of time and let the beautiful summer days zip by.

I know I’m guilty of this. I have spent my entire day off yesterday, uncluttering my apartment and trying to convince my husband that it is time for his ‘favorite’ shorts to go. He tried to convince me that a huge hole across the front (and back) pocket is not a sign of the garments’ age, but rather a trend statement. Nice try…

Thank God I won, but it didn’t change the fact that we’d spent yet another day locked inside of our apartment instead of enjoying the nice weather outdoors.

That’s why Henrik Edberg’s article “10 Small Ways to Make This The Happiest Summer of Your Life” has caught my eye this morning.

His wise suggestions include:

  • Going slow.
  • Saying yes to the new.
  • Saying no to the shoulds of the summer.
  • Just doing nothing at all.
  • Savoring the summer moments right here instead of being lost in the future or past.
  • And spending more time doing what you love!

Great advice! It’s time to put all the shoulds on hold and allow yourself to have fun! What do you think?

Are you enjoying your summer?

What will you do today to make this the best summer EVER?
