Think like a minimalist: What “essentials” would you pack for a week-long vacation?

suitcases 300x200 Think like a minimalist: What “essentials” would you pack for a week long vacation?About two weeks ago a friend from Rome called me, informing me that she was coming to Milan for a week. When I first saw her getting out of the train, I immediately got the feeling that there was something wrong with the picture. She had no suitcase! All she had was bulky beige purse with a long strap, which was hanging from her shoulder.
When I asked her where her luggage was, she just smiled at me and said that she had everything she needed with her. “Everything” included some  under ware, 2 t-shirts, 1 pair of shorts, a shawl, a swimsuit, a pair of slippers, a toothbrush, a mouse pad (a souvenir from Rome for me), some make-up and a camera.
Impressively enough my friend stayed with me the whole week and never once did I hear her say, “I wish I had brought another t-shirt with me “or “Why didn’t I pack an extra pair of shoes?”
It got me thinking, how much I actually over pack every time I travel somewhere (even if it is just for a week end) and how simpler and less stressful my trips would be if I packed in a minimalist way (no more struggles with heavy suitcases, no worries about leaving something behind, no need to spend hours packing).
What do you think? Are you a minimalist traveler or someone, who prefers to take an extra sweater ‘just in case’?
Are you capable of living out of one carry-on suitcase for an entire vacation?

What absolute essentials would you take with you for a one week trip?

What Do You Value Most In Other People?

Dalai Lama 300x198 What Do You Value Most In Other People? There are so many qualities that I admire in other people: kindness, integrity, determination, sense of humor, intelligence, ability to stay calm in stressful situations. The list goes on…
But there are two qualities that I value the most. Maybe because I feel I partly lack them myself. The first one is honesty. Not the “radical honesty”, when you say to  someone everything that comes into your mind, without having a care about what emotional reaction your words will stir in the other person’s heart. But the ability to “live from the heart”, to show people your true self and to have enough courage to speak your mind at the cost of hurting someone else’s feelings, if you know that it might help them in the long run. I have been very fortunate to have such people by my side and I owe them many of my eye-opening moments and self-discoveries.
Another quality I value is compassion and the ability to combine loving concern with clear wisdom. It is a great blessing to see strength in someone who is going through hard times and to empower them to go forward, rather than simply feeling sorry for them.
What are the qualities that you value most in other people and why?

What Is The One Skill That You Would Like To Master and Why?

skill to master 300x198 What Is The One Skill That You Would Like To Master and Why?This morning I read a list of 100 skills everyone should master. And to my greatest surprise I discovered that I lack many skills that the author of the post considered indispensable.
For example, I did not know how to trap a rat or a mouse and I sincerely hope I will never feel the need to find this out. I had no idea how to “jump start a car” or “change a tire and put on snow chains”. I am not proud of it, but I am not very ‘handy’ when it comes to fixing my car.
And to my greatest embarrassment I do not know how to do a “Heimlich Maneuver”.  I have seen people doing it in the movies, but I never knew it was called this.
I have also never tried to “use a fire extinguisher”, “deliver an eulogy” or “build a shelter”. Although, I do believe it is important to learn how to do all these things.
But if I had to choose just one skill which I would like to master, I would learn speed reading.
It fascinates me how people are able to comprehend words without actually saying them in their mind.
When I read a good book, I actually enjoy reading it at a normal speed and grasping every single word. But it would save me a lot of time when I do research, to just scan the pages and understand if I should keep reading or close the window and move on to the next page.
What about you?
If you could choose one skill to master which one would you pick and why?

What Is The Best Gift You Have Ever Received?

perfect gift 247x300 What Is The Best Gift You Have Ever Received?Yesterday while searching for gift ideas for my friend I stumbled on a comment left by one of the readers (Jacinta O’Halloran ) that started simply:

“As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears.”

I read it and almost felt like crying myself.
What a beautiful gift!

This story made me think of all the wonderful presents that I have received over the years and of those few that will stay in my heart forever.

I am sure that at some point, you too, have received a perfect gift that you will never forget.

How Do You Feel About How You Spend Your Time Each Day?

relaxing woman 300x198 How Do You Feel About How You Spend Your Time Each Day? A lot of people understand the value of their time. They know that time is money and that they need to make the best out of every moment that they have.

But this is theory. In practice, I look back and I realize how much of my time has been simply wasted. Do you know what I’m talking about? Letting two hours just fly by while watching videos on YouTube, or mulling over something someone said to me and then thinking of all the witty remarks that I could have said back, or complaining about being bored, or even dreaming about the weekend on Thursday!

Most of us realize that time is limited, yet we live like we have all the time in the world to take care of our health, to accomplish everything that we planned on accomplishing, to visit places that we have only read about, to make things up with people who we have hurt, and to live our life to the fullest.

But the truth is that the way you spend your day is the way you spend your life. It might sound overly simplistic, but in reality, it boils down to this: the more time you spend feeling happy, enthusiastic, grateful, and in harmony with yourself and the world around you, the happier, more harmonious, and joyful your life will be.

Therefore, I want you to think, and then answer this one question in the comment section below–

How do you feel about how you spend your time each day?

Do you go to bed with a smile, because you feel that today was a great day? Or do you feel frustrated, because it has been yet another stressful day at work?

What Has Been The Best Decision of Your Life So Far?

choice 209x300 What Has Been The Best Decision of Your Life So Far?

I believe that our life is shaped around the choices that we make. Some of these choices could seem insignificant and could even have been forced upon us. But even these tiny, insignificant choices can sometimes change the course of our life.
For example, one of the best choices that I have made in my life was to quit my job and start my own web site. This was a big, life – changing decision for me.
But now when I think about it, I might never have made this decision, if one day (11 months before I gave in my two weeks notice) I had not stopped at Barnes and Noble’s after work to buy a new romance to read. As I was going by the self-help section, I saw another book with a catchy name “Chicken soup for the soul” by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen.
I opened it at a random page and read, “A self-fulfilling prophecy is that you get what you expect. Why not create great expectations and the highest vision possible for yourself and the whole world?” I bought the book and finished reading it in three days.
It was the first step on the way to my life-changing decision and it was followed by me making all the other little decisions that lead me to opening my own business and later finding my life purpose.
Every single moment we are faced with choices. And every single moment we adjust our life path in some way.
Now I want to ask you a question – What has been the best decision of your life so far?
Was it a spontaneous decision or a thought – through rational choice? How did it change your life?

What is your dream job?

dream work 217x300 What is your dream job? When we were little, we dreamed about becoming an astronaut, a doctor, a famous singer, a football player, a pilot or, in my case, the owner of an ice cream store.
Now when we think about the job, the first thing that comes to our mind is the necessity to provide for our family.
But I want to offer you something – let’s forget about bad economy, mortgage, and credit card bills for a second and think about what we would really like to do, if nothing were off the table. Is it becoming a professional tennis player? Or finding the cure for a currently incurable disease? Opening your own business, or travelling around the world and writing a book about your adventures? Or maybe you would love to become a stay-at-home parent to devote more time to your children?
Dream BIG!
What is your dream job today? What makes it meaningful and worth doing?
I’m truly interested in your answers, so please take two minutes to write down your answer in a comment section below!

What Helps You To Start Your Workweek On The Right Note?

working 300x216 What Helps You To Start Your Workweek On The Right Note?I don’t know about you, but the beginning of the week is sometimes hard for me. After a worry-free and entertainment-filled weekend, it can be challenging to get back in the right mood to work.

Don’t get me wrong, I really love what I do (I can’t even call it a job, because it gives me so much satisfaction and joy), but sometimes even I feel lazy, and regret that the weekend has come to an end.

What do you do to motivate yourself every week? Is there a routine you do every week that powers your motivation?

Maybe you watch an inspirational video, read a good book, or tell yourself that it is going to be a great day? Or maybe a meditation, or prayer, helps you to regain your inner balance and motivation?

I would love to learn what helps you boost your motivation at the beginning of the workweek!

What Would You Do If You Had $10,000,000?

money growing 300x195 What Would You Do If You Had $10,000,000?It’s a great question, isn’t it? Most of us occasionally dream about making or, better yet, winning a few million dollars. But real life shows us that people who won or suddenly inherited huge amounts of money had no idea what to do with it, and most of them ended up losing it all in just 3-4 years!
I am sure that you would be smarter than that…
How would you spend $10,000,000? What are the first 3 things that you would do with it? What goals would you pursue if money was no longer an obstacle?
I thought about it for some time, and here are 7 things I would do with my money:
1. Donate $1,000,000 to small charities and make sure that my money really go to those, who need it
2. Build my own house
3. Give $200,000 to my parents and my uncle, so that they won’t have to worry about paying bills any more
4. Invest $7,000,000 in different ways: buy some properties, stocks, bonds, ecc
5. Organize a 3-week vacation for my family and closest friends
6. Take 3 months off and go in ashram in India
7. Attend a lot more workshops, lectures, seminars
I’d love to hear what would you do with your money. Write down any spontaneous ideas that come to your mind in the comment section below, be it travel around the world 10 times or develop a new motivational program that will inspire people to pursue their dreams and help them to stay positive.
